Katriane Rousseau Electric Range February 11, 2019 09:46:36
Freestanding electric ranges are commonplace in home kitchens. They are generally the most affordable type of kitchen range and testing shows the latest models do an excellent job of cooking all types of dishes. While the sky is the limit on pricing and features, you don`t have to break the bank to get a reliable, sleek-looking range, some of the best-performing models are also among the most affordable. If you want a top-performing range that won`t break the bank, the GE JB750SJSS (Est. $950) looks to be the top choice. It`s not been reviewed by Consumer Reports, but CNET has given it a thorough test and comes away very impressed. "Sneaky good performance from an unassuming oven," Ashlee Clark Thompson says. Users agree; we found a couple of hundred user reviews at sites like Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe`s, and everywhere you look, user satisfaction is similar at around 4.5 stars.
If you would be more interested in a traditional double oven range, last year`s top pick in this category, the LG LDE4415ST (Est. $1,620) remains available and still worth considering. It gets excellent feedback from owners and experts, including Recommended status at Consumer Reports, with Excellent scores for cooktop performance and oven capacity; Very Good for broiling, baking and self-cleaning. It also earns raves at Good Housekeeping, earning an overall 4-star rating, with editors saying, "When it comes to flexibility and convenience, it doesn`t get much better than the feature-rich LG 7.3 cu. ft. Electric Double Oven Range."
This Samsung range is loaded with features, including a convection oven with a broiler, food temperature probe and LED display. There are five burners, including a warming burner, and a storage drawer. This slide-in range has been available for a few years now, enough time for it to build a good number of reviews to show that owners like it just as well as the experts do. In the hundreds of comments we evaluated at sites such as Best Buy and Home Depot, the vast majority say they are very happy with this range, adding that it`s easy to clean and use and that they love the way it looks in their kitchen. More importantly, they praise its great performance in all aspects of cooking. The only real complaint we saw was that the black cooktop shows every smudge -- a not uncommon complaint about all black smoothtop cooktops.
However, this flexibility comes with some limitations. For example, the top oven lacks a standard bake setting, Reviewed notes, meaning you need to bake with fan convection if using the top oven; true convection cooking is available in the lower oven, or the entire oven if you remove the divider. Also, while you can bake in the lower oven while broiling in the upper one, "the lower oven can`t be set below 400°F—or 325°F if you`re broiling on Low." All of that means that there`s a little bit of a learning curve in mastering how to use this double oven to maximum advantage, and Perten says that spending some time with the owner`s manual is a must. However, that learning curve doesn`t seem to hinder owner enjoyment too much. User feedback is quite good, including a 4.6 star rating at Best Buy based on over 600 reviews.
The biggest thing separating this one from our favorite is the price. We just felt the limited improvements didn’t quite justify the much higher pricing for the average person. The top is made of smooth glass and has five different burners for different pots and pans. It also lacks a backsplash which gives a sleek look to the whole appliance. The bottom is another pair of ovens, one convection and one standard electric. They’re roughly the same as our top pick, a standard electric upper and a convection lower adding up to a ton of different cooking possibilities. If you’re willing to spend the extra money for much better styling, then go ahead and add this range to your home. It’s great all the way around.
If you’re willing to cut some corners to add an electric range to your home then you’ll love this one from Frigidaire. The problems with it are easy enough to deal with, especially considering the lower cost overall. It has four burners of different sizes and looks pretty much identical to the ranges that most of us grew up with. They’re coils, of course, like pretty much all of the cheaper ranges we were able to find. The oven is the biggest flaw: the exposed infrared elements are underneath the rack. If you’re not careful this can lead to a pretty lengthy and irritating cleaning process despite the manufacturer’s assurance that the oven is self-cleaning. Other than that, it’s a perfectly functioning electric range which is available at a fraction of the cost of most of them on the market. If you can make some minimal sacrifices to save some money then take a closer look and see if it matches what you need.
